B2C E-Commerce is gaining more ground worldwide

The recently published report series by Hamburg-based market research firm yStats.com analyzes in all detail various aspects of global B2C E-Commerce. Aside from general market trends, major players, product categories and trends are analysed and presented in more than 60 countries, resulting in a comprehensive overview of global B2C E-Commerce trends.

The recently published yStats.com series comprises the following four reports: “Global B2C E-Commerce Market Report 2011″, “Global B2C E-Commerce Players Report 2011″, “Global B2C E-Commerce Assortments Report 2011″ and “Global B2C E-Commerce Trends Report 2011″.

Market development – Asia continues its rise

The “Global B2C E-Commerce Market Report 2011″, the first report in the yStats.com series, features data relating to internet users and online shoppers along with revenue figures for most markets. In 2011, already more than two billion people worldwide used the internet and based on the latest predictions this figure is expected to exceed 3 billion by 2015. Global B2C E-Commerce revenue was approximately 400 to 600 billion US dollars in 2010 and is expected to grow further to 700 to 950 billion by 2015. Asia will continue to play a major role in this development, considering that internet penetration has been relatively low in many countries of this region. The percentage of B2C E-Commerce revenue compared to total retail revenue is 8 % in more developed markets, such as France or Great Britain, and could continue to increase to 10 % over the next few years. In less developed B2C E-Commerce markets, this share is still far below 3 %.

Key Findings
- Global: In 2015, there are expected to be nearly 3 billion Internet users worldwide, up from 2 billion in 2011. Global B2C E-Commerce sales reached between USD 400 and 600 billion between EUR 300 and EUR 450 million) in 2010, and between USD 700 and 950 billion is expected for 2013. Until 2013, Asia’s share on global B2C E-Commerce sales is projected to increase.

North America: In 2011, B2C E-Commerce sales in the US grew strongly. However, lower growth rates are expected for the coming years.

Latin America: In Latin American countries, B2C E-Commerce is gaining importance. Brazil is the leading market in the region, with B2C E-Commerce sales growth of almost +30% between 2010 and 2011.

Europe: Central Europe and Western Europe are advanced B2C E-Commerce market. In Eastern Europe, there is huge potential for growth. Czech Republic, Poland and Russia all recorded double-digit growth rates in B2C E-Commerce between 2009 and 2010.

Asia: Japan and South Korea are advanced B2C E-Commerce markets. In other countries, there is still potential for growth. In India, for example, B2C E-Commerce sales of less than EUR 1 billion were observed in 2010.

Five questions with Forest Grove Chamber of Commerce Director Teri Koerner

Friday, January 13th, 2012

Nearly everyone in the nation has been feeling the pinch of tough economic times. Forest Grove took an especially brutal hit the day before Thanksgiving when Prime Time Sports Bar and Restaurant burned to the ground, taking with it more than 50 local jobs.

However, there are also reasons to be optimistic. The city added several new businesses in recent months and is experiencing a slow but steady economic uptick. We caught up with Forest Grove Chamber of Commerce Director Teri Koerner for her take on the situation.

Does anything stand out about 2011 from a business standpoint?
I think we saw a little more industrial and commercial interest in town. We had a few businesses open and we had some people look at existing properties. What really stands out is the cooperation weve had with the city as far as an attempt to make it more attractive to come here. Weve put in some new tax incentives. We passed an ordinance to give a break for people moving into existing empty spaces. Theres been a lot of effort.

On Forest Groves evolving reputation as a place to do business:
I think for a while Forest Grove had a reputation of not being a bad place to go but it didnt exist. Its so competitive out there that we werent on anyones radar screen.

What can the chamber do to help Prime Time rebuild?
The only thing the chamber can do is to testify if they need help with public hearings at the planning department, working with the city to make sure the process goes well there and working with the county as kind of a liaison there.

Whats your assessment of the economy moving forward into 2012?
Cautiously optimistic. Things are slow. Everyone talks about the new normal. Its not going to happen overnight and were not out of the woods. But I think we are seeing (an upswing). I credit some of it to Intel. Theres no way the expansion thats going on at Intel can happen without it impacting us, as close as we are. The recognition that the school district has gotten has made (Forest Grove) an attractive place to relocate to. We are hearing from some of our small businesses that there is growth, slow and steady. People are feeling like there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Is there anything specific on the chambers radar for 2012?
Theres not going to be any major, key legislation this year because its a short session. When its a legislative year we of course pay attention to a lot of the bills that could affect our small businesses. This year its just providing education opportunities and continuing to work when we have requests.

Koerner added that in 2011, one of the chambers main interests was seeing that Oregon SB 610 did not pass. The bill, which would have made using temporary employees harder on small businesses, died in committee.

Hooking business: EDC, Chamber of Commerce hope to attract more than tourists

Friday, January 13th, 2012

Everyone knows that tourism is the engine that keeps Destin humming, but Shane Moody would like to see the citys employment base expand to include some of the countrys top-growing industries.

I think without a doubt, as it relates to Destin, we have to go out and look for tech companies, healthcare providers or educational service companies that employ anywhere between 20 and 25 employees, the Destin Area Chamber of Commerce President and CEO told The Log Thursday. Tech companies are clean, high earning and dont take a lot of space.

A recent study, which evaluated retail and service-sector needs in Okaloosa County, was conducted by the University of West Floridas Haas Center for Business Research and Economic Development in conjunction with the Okaloosa County Economic Development Council (EDC). It gave potential business owners and cities a look into the areas retail needs.

According to the study, and probably not a surprise to most, Destin has a surplus of restaurants, bars and retail shops. The study shows a shortfall of automobile dealers, auto parts stores and florists.

While he absolutely agrees with the studys findings, Moody said the city has a strong retail presence and doesnt need to focus on attracting big name stores to the area.

Part of Destins ambiance is the locally owned businesses, he said.

Kay Rasmussen, vice president of community and economic development for the EDC, told The Log that the study was on point with what they are seeing around the county.

While the retail needs are being met throughout the county, Rasmussen said when it comes to Destin, 2010s BP oil spill was a wakeup call to the area.

Destin is the tourism industry and it does that very well thats what they want to do, she said. The oil spill made the tourism industry realize that diversification was crucial.

As part of the EDCs mission, Rasmussen said she is working to bring high-wage, high-growth industries to Destin and Okaloosa County. In the next five years, the fastest-growing, highest-earning industries are manufacturing, information technology and professional services, Rasmussen said.

If we continue to focus on information technology and professional business services, it will help complement the community and fit into the characteristics of Destin, she said.

With the results of the study in front of him, The Log asked Moody if attracting these high-performing companies was easier said than done.

No, there just has to be a commitment and effort to make it happen, he said.

Although the calls havent been made to these high-performing companies yet, Moody said that should change as the New Year arrives.

Come January, a change in action and a change in our focus is coming, Moody said.

Online-commerce firm expanding, plans to hire 125

Tuesday, January 10th, 2012

A northern California company that provides highly targeted online marketing and supports reward/loyalty programs for large financial firms plans a major burst of hiring in its Scottsdale office.

Rearden Commerce, a privately held firm based in Foster City, Calif., intends to hire roughly 250 people in 2012, with half of those positions in Scottsdale, said Mathew Caldwell, the companys director of talent acquisition.

The Scottsdale positions, primarily in sales, include benefits such as medical and dental insurance and a 401(k) retirement plan. Total compensation likely would range from more than $50,000 a year to upwards of $115,000, depending on commissions, Caldwell said. Most are inside-sales jobs that involve contacting merchants around the nation.

Helpful qualifications include past sales experience, business acumen and some negotiation skills, he said. Rearden is looking for candidates with a range of backgrounds, from recent college graduates with business degrees to people with more than a decade of sales experience.

Founded in 2000, Rearden offers various online marketing platforms that aim to connect merchants and customers through local and highly personalized deals that cut through the information overload and clutter.

The firm plans to unveil a consumer site, deem.com, allowing consumers to purchase local services from plumbing assistance to restaurant reservations, golf tee times and massage appointments, Caldwell said. It also offers business-travel applications and has a new local-deals venture with Google — one of its more than 40 partners.

In addition, Rearden operates rewards/loyalty programs for JPMorgan Chase, Citicorp, American Express and other companies.

Rearden purchased an online-shopping company called HomeRun.com that has a Scottsdale office at 15990 Greenway/Hayden Loop, with about 30 sales positions currently. Newly hired people for Scottsdale would work out of that location.

The reason were hiring so many people in Arizona is that we have to grow our sales capability, Caldwell said.

Rearden has hired more than 260 people in 2011, bringing its workforce to more than 650. Those positions primarily are in the San Francisco Bay Area but include smaller offices in Scottsdale, Ohio, New Jersey and Bangalore, India, Caldwell said. The company, which doesnt reveal its financial data, also has a small number of engineers who telecommute from Tucson, he added.

The company will post online descriptions for the Scottsdale sales positions in coming days in the careers section of homerun.com and reardencommerce.com. It also plans to participate in Valley job fairs over the coming year.

IBM survey shows increase in Christmas Day m-commerce

Tuesday, January 10th, 2012

If you received a shiny new mobile device from Santa, according to IBM the chances are good you used it to do a little online shopping.

IBM shared some Christmas Day shopping numbers from its Coremetrics Benchmark Retail report with Forbesand the numbers for mobile commerce in general, and Apple specifically, are very good.

The report showed that online shoppers using an iPad were responsible for 7 percent of all online sales on Christmas Day. Slightly behind the iPad were iPhone users accounting for 6.4 percent of online sales.

Put another way, more than 13 percent of all online shopping on Christmas Day went through an Apple mobile device. Five percent of purchases were made using an Android device.

And whats more impressive for m-commerce is that the figures measured by IBMs Benchmark report do not include any digital content like music and games; only purchases from retail stores were counted.

IBMs report also said mobile devices were used for 18.3 percent of online sessions on retailers sites on Christmas Day. Thats an increase of 117.8 percent from last year.Sales from mobile devices were 14.4 percent of online sales on Christmas, or a 172.9 percent increase over 2010.

The numbers are following a pattern that is becoming familiar. IBMs Benchmark reports for earlier in the holiday season found that on Cyber Monday, 10.8 percent of online shoppers used a mobile device to visit a retailers site. Additonally, 6.6 percent of all online sales were made on a mobile device.

On Black Friday, IBM reported 14.3 percent of online shopping, and 9.8 percent of online sales, were made via a mobile device.

IPads and iPhones were the tools of choice on those days as well, with 7.4 percent of all online traffic on Cyber Monday, and 10.2 percent of online retail traffic on Black Friday, conducted using an iPhone or iPad, according to the IBM survey.

IBMs Coremetrics Benchmark survey looks at the real-time sales data from the sites of more than 500 US retailers.
